Losing on a high note?

Not a bad away game (though I admit I took a half-hour break during the 9 o'clock hour), even if they lost a 2-1 lead with a Dany Heatley goal. The Bruins were playing a team with a near-perfect record, after all, and if you take out the goal from P.J. Axelsson's lousy penalty, they might've been ahead 2-0. But three power plays goals by the Senators is too much.

I'm sure former Bruin Shean Donovan enjoyed it. Ottawa wins, 3-2.

Tim Thomas had 42 saves and earned the second star of the game. Chuck Kobasew had both of the Boston goals.

Ending the game with a fight should make tomorrow night's rematch a good one.

Elsewhere.

Philadelphia lost to Montreal tonight, but they made news up north anyway. The original article is here, though it's more an editorial than a news story.

Naturally, MK feels otherwise.

"They're isolated events," said Flyers forward Mike Knuble.

Still, they woke up Thursday morning to find a story with the headline "Goon Culture Lingers in Philly" in a local newspaper, which reflects a growing suspicion that intimidation is once again part of the Philadelphia game plan.

"I think it's comical," added Knuble. "We saw the article and we all got a chuckle out of it.

"It's like the team is promoting a mentality to brainwash players into doing things on the ice. Those are incidents where they all happened to be wearing the same uniform. It's unfortunate they happened, especially the last one. No one feels worse about it than Randy.

"But there's no underlying thing going on here."

Goon culture lingers in Philly, by Hugh Adami.

Despite suspensions, Flyers take hammer to Broad Street Bullies tag, Canadian Press.

And that feeling, too.

Winning in overtime. Not with the shootout. I miss regular OT. I really didn't mind ties all that much. So if we have to go to overtime, I like finishing in overtime.

Thank you, Aaron Ward and Marco Sturm. Bruins win, 4-3.

Cam Neely's reaction from upstairs was pretty good, too.

~ ~ ~

I really like the Buffalo Sabres, in part of efforts like their first season post-lockout, in part because of [my former baby] goalie Ryan Miller and his challenging early start, and in part because of the player I met out in California through my stepmum many moons ago. (How long ago? This long ago!) He was French-Canadien and I was taking French in school, so my stepmother brought me over to chat en français.

I wish I could remember his name . . .

That's the feeling!

The Bruins are up 2-0, and then 2-1, and then Brian Campbell scores on Tim Thomas, but Oh! A minute later Marc Savard puts the puck in the net! Nothing like scoring in football or basketball or baseball; the speed just isn't there. Yeah, I love that feeling!

. . .

Except when Buffalo scores in similar fashion. Darn it, Paul Gaustad -- Let me enjoy it a little longer, okay? Five minutes isn't enough.

Knees? Goalies? What?

Yeah, I just like to make myself laugh sometimes. I don't know of any other goalies who've had knee problems.

Anyway, Jordan Sigalet should be in view tomorrow evening, subbing in for Manny Fernandez. Not new news, just my last post for the day. We know how I love the underdogs.

And Michigan/Ohio grads.

Esrever ni klat s'tel.

Four days later, even people who don't really watch the Bruins are still talking about it.

Randy Jones earned only a two-game suspension. The heck?

It was announced post-game that Patrice has a concussion and a broken nose, and, amazingly, nothing else immediately appears to be wrong. Though time will tell. And concussions can suck.

Jones issued an apology during the game, read by Rob Simpson. So you knew he knew he did wrong.

It took fifteen minutes that seemed like more to stabilize Patrice, cutting away part of his pads and uniform, and get him off the ice. That "I'm okay" wave you were hoping for through the applause didn't come.

So Saturday afternoon Philadelphia Flyer Randy Jones clocked Patrice Bergeron, sending him face-first into the boards. If you saw the game, you saw Patrice go unconscious. It was beyond disturbing. Paul Kariya, Steve Moore, Patrice. I'm set with that. I never want to see someone pass out on the ice again.

Betwixt the treats and tricks.

Ahh, where to . . . begin? Continue? Perhaps I'll leave complaints about last year's league and team Web site redesigns (over-stimulation much?) for another time. Discuss Bruins roster changes? Heck, if we're talking long term, it'd just be easier to pretend that I didn't follow the team before the lockout. Predictions? Not right now; this year's starting well, but that's not much different from several other seasons. Favorite players? I'm not in the mood for nostalgia at the moment. So let's do . . .

Looking forward this season to:
That's a little simplied -- but not that much.

I mean, obviously any time a Staal's in view on the ice, I'm gonna be happy.

* Yeah, yeah, looking backward. I already said I'd get to that!

Surely, there must be something you can do.

I'm doing everything I can. And stop calling me Shirley.

First, the template design: Having accidentally republished my entire blog, rather than the current post(s), quite some time ago, I'm taking a trip down memory lane and recreating some of my old templates. I can't guarantee you'll wind up where you want to go every time you follow a link, but I'm not that much of a perfectionist and I don't have that much time for blogging any more.

Second, I haven't yet decided if I'm going to stop in once in a while or blog like it's 2004. Sooner or later, I'll discuss Mike Knuble (duh), Patrice Bergeron (duh), and why I can't name more than three Bruins -- or is that two? -- who were with the team when I started this online experience.

Third, if you don't know the film quote, well, shame on you!

Ehh . . . and Hmm . . .

The Ottawa Senators are misbehaving. Yeah, they lost by one, but now they're down two. I like JSG, but in the battle of the goalies . . . Okay, so, I already told you I'm rooting for the Sens. I loved his last trip to the finals and I was dying for Anaheim to win then. But that was then! Anyway, he was featured at the NHLPA site earlier this week.

Sidney Crosby
is the new captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, making him the youngest captain since his fellow Pearson Award nominee Vinny Lecavalier (and the youngest in league history by a whopping 27 days). Kind of funny that five months made that much of a difference, but what do I know about 19-year-old boys?

Oh, wait -- A lot, actually! I used to live with them in Peabody Hall (the happiest place on earth). Aww, memories! I can't name 'em all, but Third, Seventh, and Second Floor Boys: Here's to you!

5.29.2007

Weekend stuff.

From the NHLPA site:

Canada's Cup hopes resting on Ray Emery.

And also from Friday:

Ex-Flyers star Tocchet guilty in sports betting ring.

Finally, from Sunday:

Emery no weak link in Senators success.

5.28.2007

Stanley Cup Finals: Game One.

Okay, who saw that coming?! The Ottawa Senators were up 2-1 and oops: Anaheim won, 3-2. Third quarters can be like that (just ask the Boston Bruins). It should be pretty clear -- based on my goalie preference and my sentimentality toward tradition -- for whom I'm rooting, what with San Jose and the Sabres out.

Why does the NHL not show its entire final series on network TV? Hockey can so not afford the lack of publicity in this country . . .

4.09.2007

Season finale.

The best [hockey] part of Sunday afternoon was getting to watch the Philadelphia Flyers play the Buffalo Sabres -- and win. It was the first game in forever where I got to see Mike Knuble play, cage and all. In addition to a nice chunk of ice time, he scored the tying goal, assisted on the game winner, and had an earlier assist as well.

Two teams done 'til October. Sigh . . .

Why Jay Atkinson is cooler than cool, #37.

Jay Atkinson, author of Caveman Politics, Ice Time, and Legends of Winter Hill, all happily on my bookshelf, was featured at the Boston Globe this week. Actually, he was not featured, but rather his effort to diversify hockey was. I met him years ago when he did a reading at Salem State College. He is one of my everyday life heroes.

4.07.2007

Fin.

Another team, another time, and I'd be happy that Ray Emery had won another game.

Alas, this was the Bruins. And not an entirely unfitting end to the season, given the ups and downs, and slow starts, and fast starts followed by beatings of the year.

But the best part of the last game of the year is when the Bs players skate over and give away their shirts. Especially seeing people -- little kids or not -- who are so excited to get a certain player's sweater. Never mind that they cut off the post-game coverage without warning. Who wouldn't want his head rubbed by Glen Murray? Or to stand next to Zdeno Chara for a picture and have him tower over you? So let's just leave tonight on that pleasant thought, shall we?!

Is it too much to ask?

Just to win the last game at home? I know, Ottawa is playing for home ice advantage, but they could make the sacrifice . . .

Daniel Alfredsson scored on a 5-on-3, and Patrick Eaves just scored. The Senators are up 6-3 with 10 minutes left.

Maybe next year the Bruins will remember that my mum likes going to playoff games for her birthday . . .

Ha, ha.

I should note: local folks who can't watch the game on TV on CN8 right now can watch it online (through CN8) on a nice 3x2 inch box, only a few seconds behind the TV broadcast.

Petr Tenkrat scored; it's 4-3 Sens.

It's a tradition.

Yeah, I figured I ought to post at least for the last Boston Bruins game of the season, since at this rate I'll end up with more playoff posts than regular season . . .

First, I'd like to thank the Red Sox for once again interfering with late season coverage of a Bruins game. I know, I'm lucky that I've even getting to watch the game on CN8 since apparently that's not allowed in some markets, and those poor Bruins fans can only watch the repeat on NESN some time tonight after the Red Sox game and SportsDesk. But Daisuke Matsuzaka -- who I like, and whose name I won't bastardize in typical American fashion -- isn't even pitching this game, and the Sox started an hour after the Bs' game. Why can't the flippin' Sox be on the "alternate channel?"

Yeah, I know: Why do I even both to get upset any more?

Since the game isn't on NESN, there wasn't really a pre-game show, which means instead of seeing all the awards live, we get clips disbursed throughout the evening. (I watched the last "Rubber Biscuit" of the year during the pre-game time slot.) The Bruins went up early with a goal by Marco Sturm, but Mike Comrie score two minutes later. Petr Kalus put Boston up 2-1, but Jason Spezza scored a moment later. Tied at 2 to end the first.

Second period: Dany Heatley scored his 50th of the year, and Spezza scored his second of the game. Bruins down by two at the end of the period.

Third period: Coming up . . .

2.22.2007

Tired.

Bruins tomorrow (later today).

A cheeky goalie. I like the sound of that.

Britney Spears, whose Web site is currently one page, is in rehab again. Or out again. Wait -- what time is it?!

But seriously, Craig Ferguson did a *fantastic* monologue on Anna Nicole, Britney, and other things, and you can watch it online.

2.19.2007

Just a quick note.

Chuck Gormley has a follow-up story on Brendan Shanahan and Mike Knuble in his notebook today. The Flyers have a more detailed update on their site.

Mad TV, take two.

LA Kings on MADtv

It's sad that the folks at YouTube have finally gotten off their behinds and started pulling videos, and in doing so chose to take down the Mad TV/L.A. Kings clip.* Althought it was one of about a million posted videos that violate copyright laws, it a) was on hockey, b) didn't show any serious nudity, and c) was actually funny. Go figure.

Good thing I found it again.

* Not sad that they're actually deleting things; sad that they chose this video out of so many out there. You got that, right?
